This week has reminded me why I wasn’t that bothered when England failed to make Euro 2008, it’s largely because of the bandwagon jumpers who suddenly become football experts, despite probably not seeing a game since the last big tournament.

At the moment it’s boxing, there’s a fight tonight and just about everyone you speak to has an opinion on what is going to happen, despite the fact that they, like 99% of the population, have no time for the boxing 99% of the time. I have little or no interest in boxing so I’m not going to comment on what is going to happen in the fight, why people in a similar situation can’t follow a similar line I don’t know.

Thankfully it will all be over by tomorrow and it will again be safe to turn on the tv or radio, sit in the launderette or come online without having to listen to groundless opinion.

Rock and Roll

Those purveyors of top quality music British Sea Power have (in the name of promoting their forthcoming album) decided to split things into good and bad using the metaphor of music, asserting that rock music = good and non-rock music = bad.

While I can’t go along with that (there is a lot of good non-rock music in the world) a list which infers that Rugby League, Slaven Bilic and the Cruyff turn are “good” whereas Rugby Union, U2 and Green Day are all “bad” can’t be all wrong can it? Even if I do disagree with the classification of a few of the things to date. The full article and list can be found here.

Obviously, I thought I’d have a go at this myself so, in rock/notrock, and trying to follow the rules of the game on my article, here’s a list of my own…….

Terraces/All Seater Stadia, Spaniards/Catalans, Seagal/Seagulls, The Hoff/Hofmeister, Red Wine/White Wine, Green Olives/Black Olives, Bradford Northern/Bradford Bulls, Cheap Flights/Environmental Taxes, Stevo/Steve-O, Free Trade/Fair Trade.

A few more things that I’d like to class as non-rock but don’t have a rock equivalent are goal (or try) music, post ‘96 football fans, txt spk, and people pronouncing Atlético with an “H”, I’d better stop here because, if not, I’ll be typing away all night.
